Creative Freedom for Writers
April 2, 2016
8:30am – 5:00pm
The Franciscan Retreat Center
7740 Deer Hill Grove
Colorado Springs, CO 80919
Allen Arnold has prepared a feast for writers – and saved a place at the banquet table for you to experience the eternal, savor your gifting, and drink deep from the chalice of creative fellowship. It’s a writer’s gathering where everyone – even the overwhelmed, disheartened, and burnt out – will find refreshment and restoration for their creativity, their hearts, and their own story. From the inner workings of the publishing world to learning how to create with the Creator, this is your invitation into a story larger than you’ve dared imagine.
The Creative Foundation
While it’s essential to master the craft and the business of writing, there is something that precedes them both and runs much deeper. Discover the reason God invited you to write, how to define true success, and the two distinct creative realms every writer faces – one filled with striving and a feeling of being overwhelmed and the other filled with freedom and peace. You will receive a notebook in this session that has been prayed over and personalized to help usher you into this journey of creative intimacy with God.
Re-Writing the Writer’s Life
The story you’re writing is only part of your journey as a writer. In this session, Allen reveals why who you are is as important to publishers, editors, agents, and readers as what you write. This is a transformational teaching on how to prepare to be a published author – from knowing your Story (your life story) and your effect on others to what gatekeepers and readers want most from writers. It’s true: you really can’t write a better story than you’re living. Discovering how to live well is the prelude to writing well. And it starts here.
Secrets of the Proposal & Acquisition Process
Few writers have any idea what goes on behind closed doors in an acquisition meeting. As a former Fiction Publisher, Allen led hundreds of these meetings and now will reveal the inner dynamics of the expectations, conversations, and hot buttons that help make or break an author’s chances of standing out in these settings. Starting with the proposal, he provides insights on how to sell your idea to the agent first, then the publisher, the editor and the marketing team, and finally the reader. Covering the art of log lines, back cover copy, and the unique power of your concept, this is vital information whether writers are pursuing traditional or indie publishing routes.
How do you stay creative when it feels like there’s not enough time in the day and nothing is coming together as planned? The answer isn’t more tips and techniques. Or just trying harder. Allen has seen countless authors try that only to burn out, give up, or simply implode. But there is a way. In this session, Allen shares how the heart of the matter comes down to … your heart. Discover a Rescue Psalm that Allen interprets specifically for Creatives, ways to feed your soul with “spiritual manna,” and the importance of having a radical, life-giving community of Creative Bohemians on this journey with you.
Q&A with Allen

From how to find an agent or fine-tune your proposal to how changes in the publishing industry will impact your future novels. Get ready for a highly interactive session personalized to the questions and comments that arise during this last session.
BIO: Allen Arnold’s mission is to help artists pursue God and their gifting from an awakened heart in intimacy and freedom. He cut his teeth in the advertising world (think the HBO series Mad Men on steroids) and then spent more than twenty years in Christian publishing. As the founding Fiction Publisher for one of the world’s largest Christian publishing houses, Allen oversaw the development of more than five hundred novels. He knows first-hand how common it is for Creatives to become disheartened, overwhelmed or burnt-out, as well as what it takes to help the dreams of writers become reality. In his current role at Ransomed Heart, he oversees content from the mountains of Colorado for the transformative ministry. Before becoming an Executive Board Member for ACFW, he was awarded their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012 for his substantial contributions to the world of Christian Fiction.
